I looked through the two articles you included in your response, and I'm pretty sure my Windows 10 calendar app is set up correctly. After checking all the settings, I tried resetting the app. I'm waiting to see whether resetting will fix the problem. That sentence should have read as follows: "When I click on the settings gear within the mail application itself, I see a notifications section in the settings list that appears, but when I click on the settings gear within the calendar app itself, I do not have a notifications section in the settings list.

One reason I don't love it is what you mention: both the calendar and the email folders don't sync or aren't able to show all items from all dates. Pretty irritating. The other irritation, which seems to be shared with other MS preloaded Store apps, is that the clipboard doesn't work nicely with the rest of Windows. Often I have to try to paste something from a browser several times before it shows up in my composition. I still use Mail because I don't want or need the power and visual busyness of Outlook or other major email clients, and because it's super easy to set up for my Exchange and Google accounts.
Useful article though! Actually it just got a lot better for Exchange purposes lately. Now it handles event invites flawlessly. Before it was incapable of displaying invites and give replies. The mail app is also really good in calendar subscriptions such as setting it up to see all your Facebook events as well.
Exchange calendar stuff does work well, true. Google, not so much. Not sure how much of that is Google's conscious "be evil" strategizing, though. This app is so nice to use daily in my experience. I switch regularly between my Surface and Android device depending on the task and activity of the day. What I miss in all Microsoft calendar apps is more choice in calendar layout.

The first and obvious thing you should do when you face any sort of problem on your system is restart it. Restarting your system can solve most of the problems. If you cannot restart your system for whatever reason, you can restart the Windows Explorer process.
Most of the time this approach unlocks any locked files and solves the problem. As soon as you click on the button, Windows Explorer will restart, and the Action Center should be working again.
